I live where many people come during vacations, Maui. Maui is all I know. People love to see sunsets here, but I’d rather see sunrises. I have been going to Ka'anapali beach for as long as I can remember. I would come with my dad every day to see the sun rise. After he passed away two years ago, I began coming by myself to reminisce on the fun times I had coming every morning.
Today was a different day. I have been coming here for years, and it was usually just my dad and me. Today it was me and a tall, brown-haired and tan skinned boy. I took a glance at him and promptly looked away. I was so displeased with him being here. It was my time. My time to sit down and just take in the blend of salty air from the ocean combined with the coconut water I always have on me.
He sat about 10 feet away from me. I decided to just ignore him and enjoy what was left of the sunrise.
The next day he was there again. Sitting at the same spot, just staring at me.
For the next 5 days I came to see the sunrise, he was already there. Sitting in the same spot.
As I sat in the same place I always did, I could see him from the corner of my eye getting up. “Is he walking my direction?” I thought.
“Hey” he says as he sits right beside me.
“Hi” I respond abruptly.
“Are you from here?” he asks.
I take a deep breath and say nicely, “Yes, I am”.
“I just moved here. I’ve heard sunsets in this beach are incredible, but I think the sunrises bring some type of peace and tranquility”.
“I know right” I answer enthusiastically.
Minutes turned into hours as we talked, watching the sunrise.
For the next three weeks, we met in the same spot. I brought the coconut water; he brought the towels to sit on.
As he leans in towards my face, my cheeks redden, and I just realize what's coming afterward.
